Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
