European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
